A recent documentary on the BBC highlighted the importance of buying authentic carbon fibre parts for bikes. An increasing amount of counterfeit carbon parts are being sold online which poses a great risk to riders that unknowingly purchase unreliable products.
Biker Matt Phillips, who purchased a set of fake carbon handlebars on eBay thinking that they were legitimate, suffered great injuries when they failed to work. When Matt’s handlebars snapped into three in the middle of a ride, Matt broke his wrist in two places causing him to have plaster for two months and months of physiotherapy.
Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident as over 2,000 counterfeit carbon parts were found to have sold on the internet in just one month.
It’s important to ensure that you are always safe when replacing parts on your bike. Avoid buying parts online where you cannot be sure of the manufacture.
